The Hitman Game Series – Play The Game With Agent 47
Hitman delivers the perfect game mix of story and gameplay
The Hitman game is one of the best-known video games in the world, a massive success in the gaming world that’s spawned games, books, comics, graphic novels, and even a blockbuster movie franchise of Hitman (2007) and Hitman: Agent 47 (2015). The Hitman game series has been produced by IO Interactive, Eidos Interactive, and Square Enix.
Across the seven games of the series so far, you’ll enter the dangerous world of Agent 47, cloned assassin-for-hire, the best in his dangerous business. And, although the Hitman game series is a shoot-em-up of sorts, it’s more of a stealth game, where players are rewarded for completing their missions in as quiet and covert a way as possible, with the ultimate accolade being the rank of ‘Silent Assassin’.
You can play the Hitman game series on multiple platforms; Hitman on PS4, Hitman Xbox, or Hitman PC, as well as mobile versions of a few versions of the Hitman game.
We love the Hitman game series here at JustGamers. But in case you aren’t one of the millions of fans and you’re wondering what it’s all about, this JustGamers Hitman review will give you a introduction to this wonderfully dangerous world!
What makes the Hitman game series work? – story gameplay
The secret to Hitman’s success comes down to two very simple things; the storylines and the fabulous Hitman gameplay. Over seven games, it’s what makes playing the game, whether it’s Hitman on PS4, Xbox, or PC, just so exciting and involving.
The developers have made the game series work, not just as a fantastically exciting game, but as an enthralling storyline, with each game having its own thrilling back story. Agent 47’s life as both the result of a revolutionary cloning experiment to produce the perfect assassin and as part of the shadowy International Contract Agency (ICA) is fully realised to make this much more than just another computer game shooter.
And when it comes to gameplay, Hitman delivers yet again. In every game, the basic idea is to hunt and kill the targets you’ve been given. But the cleverness of Hitman is that you’re rewarded for doing the job as professionally as possible, with one of the greatest ratings you can get being the ‘Silent Assassin’, where every target is taken down with just one shot. This isn’t some Doom-esque game of kill everything that moves, this is targeted, this is precise, this is Hitman.
Now, just which Hitman game do we think is the best? Read on to find out!
The Hitman game series – seven great video games, but which is the best?
The Hitman game series, as of 2019, is made up of seven different main games; Hitman: Codename 47 (2000), Hitman 2: Silent Assassin (2002), Hitman: Contracts (2004), Hitman: Blood Money (2006), Hitman: Absolution (2012), Hitman (2016), and Hitman 2 (2018).
As you’d expect, you’ll find these games as Hitman on PS4, Hitman Xbox, and Hitman PC games. But, not all Hitman games are equal, so here, we’re going to give you the Hitman games ranked, from pretty darned great to absolutely amazing!
7. Hitman: Codename 47 (2000): Hitman 1 might still be great, but it’s just a little dated.
6. Hitman: Absolution (2012): Where Hitman lost its way a little in its gameplay.
5. Hitman: Contracts (2004): improved gameplay but the story lets it down.
4. Hitman 2: Silent Assassin (2002): The moment where it all came together, with the introduction of the ranking system, rewarding players for quiet kills over everything else.
3. Hitman (2016): A return to form after the slightly disappointing Absolution, although the episodic releases of extras for Hitman Xbox, PC, and PS4 was probably a mistake.
2. Hitman: Blood Money (2006): Fourth in the series is second favourite in this list. It stands with games released a decade and more later as a great example of how to get things right.
1. Hitman 2 (2018): The latest and the greatest. The Hitman 2018 game has beautiful gameplay, great storyline. The epitome of the Hitman series so far!
