IEM Cologne 2021 Weekend Recap
Tournament Overview
IEM Cologne 2021 is a S-Tier tournament and will distribute $1,000,000 dollars, 10,240 Pro Tour points and 8,000 Blast Premier points. This event takes place in Cologne, Germany, and started on July 6 and will end on July 18. You can watch the tournament on the ESL_CSGO Twitch Channel and follow the entire tournament on Liquipedia. There are 24 teams competing each week including Gambit Esports, Astralis, Team Liquid, NaVi and G2 Esports.

Group A Recap
Group A slots eight teams: Gambit Esports, Mousesports, Ninjas in Pyjamas, Team Liquid, Virtus.pro, BIG, Complexity and G2 Esports. After three days of Best of three matches, G2 Esports has won their group after defeating Complexity and BIG with a great performance. They also beat Gambit Esports in a close BO3. Mousesports and Complexity were the first two teams to get eliminated. Ninjas in Pyjamas, Team Liquid and BIG were eliminated in the lower bracket. Virtus.pro qualified for the playoffs after defeating BIG in the lower bracket final.
Team Liquid vs. Mousesports gave us the most exciting BO3 in group play at IEM Cologne 2021 after exceeding 50 rounds in their last match. G2 Esports gave us the fastest game in the group after defeating BIG with a 16-1 score.
G2 Esports has shown an excellent performance and is now preparing for the semifinals of the IEM Cologne 2021 and has one of the best teams in the tournament. Gambit Esports will always be considered a tough opponent after winning Intel Extreme Masters Season XVI – Summer last month.
Virtus.pro was the third team in group A to qualify for the playoffs of the tournament and will have a difficult match in the quarterfinals against Astralis.
Group B Recap
Group B slots 8 teams: Natus Vincere (NaVi), Renegades, Furia Esports, Team Vitality, Astralis, FaZe Clan, Heroic and Team Spirit. This group showcases the most competitive teams in the world and also known as the “group of the dead.”
Like group A, this group had three intense days of competition. FaZe Clan and Astralis played the best game of the group, resulting in 47 rounds. Renegades and Team Spirit were the first two teams to say “goodbye” in the tournament. Furia Esports, Heroic and Team Vitality were eliminated in the lower bracket. FaZe Clan was the third team to qualify for the playoffs after defeating Heoric 2-1.
The return of “Olofmeister” gave FaZe Clan the chance to beat the best teams of the tournaments. Natus Vincere and Astralis were the two teams to qualify for the playoffs in the upper bracket. They had an interesting second match, which ended with 43 rounds. Natus Vincere and S1mple will always be considered the favorite by everyone to get the championship, and the results in group B prove this sentiment.
Astralis is not far behind, and they also started as favorites to win the championship.
Key Matches Heading Into Next Weekend
The quarterfinals of the tournament will take place July 16 – 9:00 UTC-5/ Astralis and Virtus.pro will face off whileGambit Esports and FaZe Clan will also fight for a spot in the semifinals.
The semifinals of the IEM Cologne 2021 will take place July 17-9:00 UTC-5. G2 Esports will play the winner of the first quarterfinal (Astralis/Virtus.pro).
The other semifinal will take place July 17-12:15 UTC-5. Natus Vincere will face the winner of Gambit Esports and FaZe Clan. The grand final is scheduled for July 18-9:00 UTC-5. All the matches in this stage of the tournament will generate an enjoyable final match for fans worldwide. The semifinals match between G2 Esports and Astralis will likely be the most exciting.
