Does Apex Legends Have a Campaign?
Apex Legends launched in 2019, serving as a battle-royale spawn of the Titanfall franchise. It took advantage of the ever-increasing popularity of the genre and is considered one of the best battle royale games around. It’s a high-octane, exhilarating, hero-based title that utilises a range of power-ups, abilities, and a hugely vertical style of gameplay. But, with all that in mind, is there anything in the way of an Apex Legends campaign?
Let’s find out.
One and The Same
Technically, Apex Legends is set in the very heart of the Titanfall universe. First seen in 2014, Titanfall was originally a multiplayer-only game that saw players fight in a competitive arena that featured huge, mechanical constructs known as ‘Titans’. At certain points throughout the fight, players would summon their Titans, which would then fall from the sky, hence the name. However, when the second game launched in 2016, it brought with it a well-designed and well-received single-player campaign.
But, when Apex Legends was released in 2019, it didn’t follow suit. While there isn’t an Apex Legends campaign, there is a Titanfall campaign, and it’s pretty much the same thing. When you’re playing the two titles, you can easily tell they’re from the same universe. There are several crossovers, references, and easter eggs to be found, and the same weapons and gameplay style are prevalent. If you were seeking any kind of Apex Legends campaign, you’d just flip back and play Titanfall 2.
Sure, it’s not really an Apex Legends campaign, but it’s the closest thing you’re going to find.
It’s a Battle Royale For a Reason
Unfortunately, almost every battle royale title out there lacks some kind of static campaign mode. While they’re often updated with missions, quest lines, and fleshed-out backstories, for the most part, these missions are optional and almost certainly able to be dismissed entirely. For example, Call of Duty: Warzone has always featured a story that has run in the background of the title, but the player’s involvement with this story is totally optional.
There were attempts to introduce some kind of a single-player story to Apex Legends, but it was short-lived. Within a year of launch, developers attempted to give solo and single players a better experience, introducing missions that could be carried out alongside normal, regular play. Since then, the concept hasn’t been revisited, and right now, it’s just an all-out battle royale experience.
But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
Apex Legends is easily one of the best free battle royale games to exist in 2022. It’s still widely enjoyed and appreciated and stands as one of the most popular battle royale games in the world. It’s regularly updated and there’s something of a content roadmap in place.
So, even if there’s no Apex Legends campaign, you’re still in for an awesome time when you pick up this free-to-play battle royale title.
