Own the Zone — Hedera launches World Cup 2022 metaverse game
Hedera has announced the release of Own the Zone, a FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 metaverse game, to celebrate the tournament.
Developed by Reality+ and OTZ Sports, HBAR Foundation VP Alex Russman praised Own the Zone for having the best technology and gameplay in the genre. The game offers fans a chance to win limited NFTs and real-world prizes.
Wallet construction and coin-minting processes begin as soon as fans sign up for the game, offering a seamless transition into Web3. Powered by the Hedera Token Service (HTS), the game uses HBAR as its cryptocurrency.
“We’re proud that OTZ Sports and FIFA has chosen Reality+ as its partner in the exciting world of Web3, and we’re absolutely thrilled to be launching Own The Zone™ for the World Cup Qatar 2022™ – and onwards to the Women’s World Cup Australia 2023™.”

To play the game, players choose two of eight on-pitch zones for every match, with each zone representing an area on a football field. When a real-world game plays, every action within the allocated zones gives players points. The more matches a player plays, the bigger their chance to win tickets to The Best FIFA Football Awards™ and £5,000 every game.
FIFA’s Web3 project for 2022 World Cup
As esports gaming becomes some of the fastest-growing opportunities in the entertainment industry, FIFA continues to expand its reach into new digital spaces and platforms.
In November, Chief business officer Romy Gai announced that FIFA had established partnerships with various game developers to develop Web3 games to celebrate the 2022 World Cup.
“This is a hugely exciting group of partnerships that we’ve entered into as we embrace a new, digitally-native football fan and engage with them in the spaces that we know they are already active within,” Gai said.
“As we continue to build our gaming strategy long into future, it’s certain that web 3.0 will have an important role to play, and this marks the start of our journey.”
